Tesla Model Y Arrives in India, Supercharger Station Opens in Mumbai

The electric vehicle revolution continues to gain momentum in India, with Tesla's Model Y making its debut as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) and the launch of the company's first official Supercharger station in Mumbai.

The Supercharger station, located inside the One BKC office complex in Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai, offers four high-speed V4 Superchargers providing up to 250 kW charging power. Alongside these, there are four slower AC Destination chargers. This marks Tesla's first official Supercharger infrastructure in India, launched alongside the opening of an Experience Center showroom in Mumbai.

The Supercharger can add about 267 km of range in 15 minutes to a Model Y, making long-distance travel more accessible for electric vehicle owners. Charging costs approximately ₹24 per kWh for Supercharging and ₹14 per kWh for Destination Charging.

Tesla is planning a total of around eight Supercharger stations across Mumbai and Delhi, though exact locations beyond the One BKC site have not been disclosed yet. The company has expressed plans to expand in the major metropolitan areas of Mumbai and Delhi with more stations expected soon.

The Model Y, Tesla's maiden offering for India, is available in Standard and Long Range variants. The prices start at ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Tesla is accepting bookings for the Model Y from pan-India.

Deliveries for the Model Y are expected to begin from September, with Tesla prioritizing deliveries for Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, and Gurugram initially, followed by other parts of the country. The Model Y comes with a CCS2 charging port, making it compatible with other fast charging stations.

The payment process for the Tesla charging station will be available on the Tesla app on your smartphone. The charging station will also have four destination chargers (AC chargers) providing charging at 11 kW.

Tesla is also planning to open its second Experience Center in Delhi, likely located in Aerocity. The distance between the Gateway of India and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai is nearly 29 km one way, making the Supercharger station a convenient stop for travellers.

The Tesla Supercharging network has an uptime of 99.95%, ensuring minimal downtime for charging. The charging speed of the Tesla Supercharging network can vary due to factors like battery's state of charge and temperature. The Tesla Supercharging Stalls have a peak charging speed of 250 kW.

In summary, the launch of the Tesla Model Y and the Supercharger station in Mumbai marks a significant step forward for electric vehicles in India. With plans for more Supercharger stations in Mumbai and Delhi, Tesla is set to expand its presence in the country, making electric mobility more accessible and convenient for Indian consumers.

The Tesla Model Y's arrival in India and the opening of the Supercharger station in Mumbai signify an advancement in the electric vehicle industry, particularly within the automotive sector. The Supercharger station's charging power of up to 250 kW indicates a symbiotic relationship between the technology and transportation industries, aiming to make long-distance travel more viable for electric-vehicle owners. The implementation of this charging infrastructure in India's major urban centers like Mumbai and Delhi is expected to positively impact lifestyle choices by providing a more sustainable transportation option. As Tesla expands its network, cheaper charging costs could potentially influence finance considerations when purchasing electric vehicles. The opening of a second Experience Center in Delhi indicates Tesla's commitment to establishing itself as a significant player in India's electric-vehicle market.
