Tesla's Shanghai Mega Factory achieves significant milestone, manufacturing its 1000th Megapack.
Tesla Begins Production of Megapack Energy Storage Systems at Shanghai Megafactory
Tesla has taken a significant step forward in its global expansion of renewable energy storage solutions with the commencement of Megapack production at its Shanghai Megafactory. Located in the Lingang New Area of Pudong, Shanghai, China, the factory began operations on February 11, 2025.
The Shanghai Megafactory, Tesla's first dedicated energy storage factory outside the United States, is poised to serve markets in Europe and China. In just 5.5 short months, the factory has already produced 1,000 Megapacks, showcasing rapid production scaling.
With an annual production capacity of approximately 40 GWh, or around 10,000 Megapack units, the Shanghai Megafactory mirrors the capacity of Tesla's Lathrop Megafactory in California. This capacity is enough to power 50,000 households in Shanghai for a year.
The Megapack, an ultra-large commercial energy storage battery, is a powerful battery that can store and supply energy, helping to stabilize the grid and prevent power outages. Each Megapack stores about 3,900 kWh of electricity, equivalent to the battery capacity of 62 Model 3 rear-wheel-drive vehicles.
Tesla's energy products, including the Megapack, Powerwall, and Powerpack, are deployed in over 65 countries and regions worldwide. The Shanghai Megafactory's produced Megapacks will be shipped to various destinations, including Europe, as the company continues to meet the growing global demand for large-scale renewable energy storage solutions.
The Shanghai Megafactory also produces the Model 3 and Model Y for the Chinese market. The factory, which began construction on May 23, 2024, is located in the Lingang area of Pudong, Shanghai. This strategic location allows for efficient distribution to both domestic and international markets.
The first batch of Megapacks produced at the Shanghai Megafactory was shipped overseas on March 21, marking a significant milestone in Tesla's global energy storage expansion. This strategic expansion is expected to play a crucial role in the company's mission to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy.
