The Framework Desktop Offers a (Partially) Customizable PC Design with Permanently Integrated Memory
Dive into the world of desktop customization with Framework's latest offering – the Framework Desktop. Say goodbye to the monotonous, cookie-cutter desktops and hello to a PC tower packed with customizable parts. This year, Framework unveils two original designs: the Framework 12 2-in-1 convertible laptop and the Framework Desktop.
Desktops have always been customizable, but Framework's compact and cost-effective design promises a mighty punch. The only downside? You may have less control than building your own PC. But hey, who wouldn't appreciate an optional handle? Reminds us of Nintendo's GameCube from 2001 – a bold design that eventually won our hearts.
The Framework Desktop starts at a competitive $1,100, but the top-tier version with 128GB memory and a powerful CPU costs $2,000. While the 4.5L frame might seem small, remember, customization is the name of the game. So, if you've built a PC before, you know the drill – it might not be as modular as you'd hope, but it's still less modular than most desktops.
Talking about the juicy bits, the Framework Desktop boasts an AMD Ryzen AI Max chip, a Zen 5 CPU featuring a large CPU cooling section. For memory, Framework traded modularity for affordability, soldering the LPDDR5x RAM. According to a blog post, AMD and Framework collaborated to tackle this issue, ensuring the Ryzen AI Max chip fits the overall design.
So what are the perks of the Framework Desktop? Two PCIe NVMe M.2 2280 slots for extra storage, Wi-Fi 7 support, and a customizable front panel. Plus, if you're around for LAN parties, you're covered with a handy carrying handle. You can even choose between Windows 11, various Linux distros, or Bazzi for a gaming-focused setup.

Where Framework truly shines is in its commitment to modularity and customization. The design draws inspiration from its popular ultra-modular mobile devices, like the Framework Laptop 13 and Laptop 16. Framework hasn't released pricing details yet, but the device should be available for pre-order in April 2023.

Patel, a tech enthusiast, couldn't help but appreciate the customizable aspects of the Framework Desktop, noting its similarity to the GameCube's bold design from 2001.
