The mother of Suchir Balaji, the OpenAI whistleblower who was discovered deceased in his San Francisco apartment on November 26, is advocating for an FBI investigation into his passing. Poornima Ramarao expressed this on X on November 27, stating that Balaji's family has engaged the services of a private investigator, whose preliminary findings reportedly challenge the City's chief medical examiner's conclusion that Balaji died by suicide.
Balaji, at only 26 years old, had spent four years with OpenAI, playing a crucial role in amassing the data used to train ChatGPT. He grew disenchanted with the transformation of OpenAI from a non-profit research organization into a commercial entity, and resigned in August, subsequently airing allegations of mass copyright infringement in an interview with the New York Times. The Times is currently embroiled in a contentious legal dispute with OpenAI, asserting that ChatGPT has been trained on its articles without authorization.
According to Ramarao's X post (whose authenticity is yet to be confirmed), Balaji's apartment showed signs of an intrusion, and there were marks indicative of a struggle in the bathroom. The post included images of Balaji that do not appear in other online sources and linked to a GoFundMe page established to finance further investigation, which has amassed over $47,000.
Elon Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI and currently entangled in a lawsuit against the AI company, expressed his thoughts on Ramarao's post, stating simply, "This doesn't seem like a suicide."
Gizmodo reached out to Ramarao for comment but has yet to receive a response. OpenAI referred to a prior message expressing condolences to Balaji's family.
Balaji joined OpenAI as an intern in 2018 and became a full-time employee in 2021. In an interview with Business Insider following her son's demise, Ramarao reported that Balaji was exceptionally talented from a young age and made substantial contributions to ChatGPT's training methods and infrastructure during his tenure there.
