The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has announced the issuance of an updated Guide to Inventorying, Scheduling, and Disposition of Federal Records on July 29, 2025. This revised handbook aims to help agencies streamline the record scheduling and appraisal process, particularly in the context of electronic recordkeeping.

The new guide now incorporates modern electronic recordkeeping workflows, enhancing how agencies schedule and appraise electronic records. To support this transition, several new job aids have been added to help agencies navigate the complexities of electronic records management.

Three companion guides have been released alongside the main guide. These include the Guide to Aggregate Item Schedules (Big Buckets), Guide to Machine-Implementable Disposition Instructions, and Scheduling Guide 9: Scheduling Records in Electronic Systems. These guides focus specifically on electronic records management, providing valuable resources for agencies as they adapt to the digital age.

Agencies are advised to update their records disposition manuals and management applications with the new disposition authority citations and schedule items related to electronic records. Implementation guidance includes disseminating updates to all relevant staff and providing training to ensure effective use of the new schedules for electronic systems.

The revised guide better reflects current practices associated with electronic recordkeeping and emphasizes a shift towards a more digital-centric, machine-readable, and streamlined approach. This aligns with technological advances and compliance requirements for federal electronic recordkeeping.

The new guide will be highlighted on the Records Express Blog in the coming weeks. For any questions regarding the new guide, agencies are encouraged to contact their assigned appraiser.
