Today's 'Wordle' puzzle solution, hints, and tips for Thursday, 2nd January
It's the first Thursday in 2025 and I'm still shaking my head in disbelief that it's already the new year. This entire holiday season has felt like a surreal, dreamlike state that I can't quite put my finger on.
Anyway, yesterday was Wordle Wednesday and I slipped up and gave you the wrong riddle – one that I'd used in a past Wordle Wednesday post! I'll make up for that mistake next week by doing the original one. Oops! Here's the riddle:
It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt. It lies behind stars and under hills,And empty holes it fills. It comes out first and follows after,Ends life, kills laughter. The answer is night.

POND didn't help much this time, leaving me with 5 grey boxes and 438 possibilities left. POUR brought some color back, narrowing it down to just 8 possibilities. I thought I had it cracked with GRAPE, but ran out of luck. If only I had CHOSEN different!

Today’s Wordle Origin
Chosen is the past tense of choose. The word "choose" comes from Old English "cēosan", which meant "to select or decide." This word can be traced back to Proto-Germanic "keusaną", which also meant "to choose" or "taste." The root can be linked to the Proto-Indo-European "ǵeus-", which meant "to taste or relish." Over time, the meaning evolved from the idea of tasting to selecting or making decisions.

In the world of Wordle, I'm preparing for a redemption next week after accidentally repeating an old riddle during Wordle Wednesday. Today's hint for the Wordle game is "Pluck." Remember, the answer ends with an 'e'. (wordle hint, Wordle today)
For those following along at home, the answer to the previous riddle was "night". In today's Wordle #1293, the word I unsuccessfully tried was "GRAPE". (wordle answer, Wordle hints and clues)
Now, let's focus on today's challenge. After "Pluck", I went on to guess "POND", adding some color but not getting much closer to the answer. The next attempt was "POUR", which narrowed the possibilities down to 8. Unfortunately, my best guess, "GRAPE", was not the solution. (wordle clue, today's wordle)
In the realm of competitive Wordle, I scored 0 points for guessing in 4, and I lost to the Wordle Bot, who guessed in 3 today. (Competitive Wordle Score)
