Toyota's groundbreaking approach to its Crown Sport's design layout.
In a groundbreaking move, Toyota has debuted the Crown Sport, a sporty SUV that marks a new chapter in the automotive industry. This latest addition to the Crown family follows the successful launch of the Crossover, signaling Toyota's commitment to diversifying its offerings within the SUV segment.
The Crown Sport is the result of a full redesign, a decision suggested by then-President Akio Toyoda in February 2020. The development of this new model was guided by the spirit of "innovation and challenge," a tradition passed down from successive Crown chief engineers.
Yuji Honma led the development team, which aimed to create an "exhilarating car" that would impress customers upon sight, drive, or ride. The team's efforts to innovate and challenge traditional Crown concepts were traced over two articles in Toyota Times.
The design of the rear fenders, the asymmetric interior, and the agile driving performance were key aspects of the Crown Sport's development. The vehicle features an aggressive front grille and styling cues that set it apart in the midsize SUV segment by emphasizing a sporty, luxurious character inspired by Toyota's Crown legacy.
The development of the latest Crown took an ultra-fast 21 months, compared to the usual four years for car development. This rapid pace was a direct result of the team being asked to think more seriously about the redesign.
The Crown Sport is one of the four body variations of the new Crown. Competing in a crowded luxury SUV segment, the Crown Sport faces challenges in maintaining brand heritage while shifting the Crown from sedan to sporty SUV. It also needs to ensure high performance without sacrificing comfort and reliability, given Toyota’s traditional focus on these aspects.
Despite these challenges, the Crown Sport promises to offer modern performance features and transform the Crown legacy into an SUV format. With its bold, aggressive styling and luxury-sport hybrid focus, it aims to combine elegance with enhanced sportiness, likely targeting customers seeking a luxury SUV with strong visual appeal and performance attributes.
