Train journeys made entertaining: Indian Railways introduces complimentary films and shows on RailOne

Train journeys become more entertaining with RailOne, an offering by Indian Railways, as it provides complimentary films and shows at your seat during long travel.

The Indian Railways has taken a significant step forward in enhancing passenger satisfaction by introducing a super app called RailOne. Developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and authorized by IRCTC, this all-in-one platform simplifies travel and now offers free entertainment through the integration of Prasar Bharati's WAVES OTT platform.

RailOne caters to passengers across India's diverse linguistic and cultural spectrum, with content available in over 10 Indian languages. To access this free OTT streaming on the RailOne app during train journeys in India, follow these steps:

  1. Open the RailOne app on your mobile device while onboard a train.
  2. Log in using your mPIN or biometric authentication (such as fingerprint).
  3. Navigate to the 'More Offerings' section within the app.
  4. Select the 'Go To WAVES' option, which opens the integrated WAVES OTT platform.
  5. Browse and stream a variety of free content including movies, web series, documentaries, audio shows, games, and live TV in over 10 Indian languages.

The WAVES OTT platform, launched in November 2024, powers the OTT content, enabling passengers to enjoy hassle-free streaming throughout their journey. RailOne consolidates functions previously spread across multiple railway apps such as RailConnect and UTS, positioning RailOne as more than just a booking app.

Industry experts suggest that such features could open doors for future monetisation through advertising or premium content partnerships. The RailOne app offers services such as ticket booking, live train tracking, grievance redressal, e-catering food orders, porter and last-mile taxi services, making it a single point of access for travellers.

This move by RailOne mirrors a growing global trend where transport providers are improving passenger satisfaction by offering digital experiences. By integrating the WAVES OTT platform, RailOne is following this trend, aiming to make train journeys more enjoyable and engaging for passengers.

The integration of the WAVES OTT platform within the RailOne app marks a move towards lifestyle enhancement for Indian passengers, offering free entertainment options in multiple Indian languages. As RailOne expands its services beyond ticket booking to include various amenities such as onboard entertainment, it steps into the realm of finance and technology, potentially exploring future monetization strategies through adverts or premium partnerships, a trend prevalent in the global defi (decentralized financial) and transportation sectors.
