TSMC's chairman and former chair chosen for the Noyce Award honor
Dr. C.C. Wei and Dr. Mark Liu, two prominent figures in the semiconductor industry, have been awarded the prestigious Robert N. Noyce Award. This recognition is the highest individual honor in the semiconductor industry, bestowed by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA).
The award is named after semiconductor pioneer Robert N. Noyce, co-founder of Fairchild Semiconductor and Intel, and is given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to semiconductor technology or industry policy.
Dr. Wei, the current chairman and CEO of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), joined the company in 1998 and assumed leadership in 2024. Dr. Liu, who joined TSMC in 1993, served as the company’s chairman and co-CEO before retiring in 2024.
Their key contributions include reshaping the modern semiconductor ecosystem both in the United States and globally, revolutionizing chip manufacturing technology, and leading TSMC to become a cornerstone of the global semiconductor supply chain. Under their leadership, TSMC has developed countless groundbreaking technology advancements that have improved computing performance, power efficiency, and strengthened global semiconductor supply chains.
Dr. Wei and Dr. Liu bring over 80 years of combined industry experience to pioneer semiconductor innovation at TSMC. Both leaders expressed gratitude for the recognition, with Dr. Wei feeling humbled to follow in the footsteps of TSMC founder Dr. Morris Chang, and Dr. Liu acknowledging the mentorship and collaboration that contributed to their successes.
Dr. Liu also mentioned his appreciation for mentors such as Dr. Chang, colleagues, and partners who have supported his contributions to innovations and growth in the semiconductor industry. Mark Liu was recently appointed to the board of directors of US-based dynamic random access memory chip supplier Micron Technology Inc.
The SIA awards dinner where Wei and Liu will accept the award is scheduled for Nov. 20 in San Jose, California. John Neuffer, SIA president and CEO, has stated that Dr. C.C. Wei and Dr. Mark Liu are industry titans who have reshaped the modern semiconductor ecosystem and revolutionized chip manufacturing technology.
