UK MoD Appoints Senior Officers to Drive Responsible AI Integration

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has taken a significant step towards integrating AI responsibly. Each major MoD organisation has appointed a Responsible AI Senior Officer (RAISO), as outlined in the recently released report 'Laying the Groundwork - Responsible AI Senior Officers' Report 2025'. Diane Staheli, formerly the Chief of Responsible AI at the US Department of Defense, has been appointed as one of the RAISOs overseeing AI ethical compliance.

The report signals the start of integrating AI into routine MoD activities while maintaining public trust. Good governance is identified as crucial for fostering a responsible AI culture within the defence sector. RAISOs will oversee compliance with AI ethical principles and ensure the safety and transparency of AI systems. Their role includes establishing clear escalation routes for addressing concerns related to AI systems.

AI and digital warfare innovations are seen as key to strengthening and securing the UK's armed forces. The MoD aims to enhance operational effectiveness through AI while adhering to ethical and legal standards. The report emphasizes the importance of AI systems addressing fairness, accountability, robustness, and human oversight.

The MoD's commitment to responsible AI is evident in the appointment of RAISOs and the release of the comprehensive report. These initiatives demonstrate the ministry's dedication to integrating AI into its activities while maintaining the highest ethical standards and public trust.
