UK's Allianz Shifts Gears Towards Electric Vehicles Adoption
In a significant move towards a greener future, Allianz UK has announced its intention to transition its vehicle fleet to 100% electric vehicles (EVs) by the end of 2030. This decision comes as part of the company's wider sustainability strategy, which aims to reduce UK operations' greenhouse gas emissions by 70% per employee by the same year.
As of this year, 160 new electric vehicles have been ordered for Allianz's UK fleet, bringing the total to 307, representing 28% of the total fleet. This strategic shift aligns with Allianz’s wider net-zero emissions goals and efforts to build expertise in the EV market.
The new deal will see Allianz switch to hybrid power for its Toyota and Lexus vehicle fleet. However, the exact number of hybrid or electric vehicles Allianz will add to its fleet has not been specified.
Allianz has enhanced its Motor Fleet and Small Fleet products to provide cover for electric vehicles. The company now offers a service to inspect commercial EV charging points, and its engineer surveyors can now inspect these charging points for safety. This move indicates Allianz's commitment to supporting customers as they electrify their fleets.
The transition to EVs is intended to support Allianz's customers across the country with vehicles fit for purpose that align with their net-zero strategy. However, there are factors related to EVs that could influence claims complexity and cost. While EVs generally have lower regular servicing needs, they can be more expensive to repair when accidents occur, especially due to battery system complexity and potential repair specialist requirements. This might increase claims costs.
Insurers like Allianz are adapting claims strategies and underwriting to handle the evolving risk profile of EVs, possibly including specialized repair networks and expertise. No direct information states claims settlement times will lengthen due to the EV fleet transition. Nonetheless, rural areas might face logistical challenges related to access to charging infrastructure and specialist EV repairs, which could affect turnaround times, although this is not explicitly documented for Allianz.
Allianz’s experience managing its own EV fleet may help optimize claims handling and mitigate potential delays, as the company develops better knowledge and processes around EVs.
It is worth noting that Allianz's EV transition initiative aligns with the EV100 initiative, a global campaign that unites companies dedicated to accelerating the transition to electric vehicles.
Allianz has been trialling a new process for fleet vehicle orders since 2025, and in 2024, the company achieved a 47% greenhouse gas emissions reduction per employee based on a 2019 benchmark. Allianz has also introduced a new driver app for all company drivers and their line managers to accurately record business mileage and track car travel and emissions.
In 2021, Allianz Insurance entered a new vehicle fleet deal with Toyota and Lexus, running until 2023. Bethany Thomas, Head of Sustainability at Allianz UK, commented on the move, stating it underscores Allianz's commitment to sustainability as both an insurer and employer.
While the specifics of the transition are still being worked out, Allianz's proactive approach and internal fleet experience aim to manage the potential challenges associated with EVs. Whether this will lead to longer or more expensive claims settlements in rural areas remains to be seen, but these are potential operational considerations insurers must address.
