Ultra-rapid charging stations operated by Shell implement a new pricing strategy in over 1,600 locations across Germany.
Shell, a global energy company, is taking a significant step towards promoting the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in Germany by introducing dynamic pricing for its Shell Recharge rapid charging stations. This move aims to provide financial incentives for EV drivers to charge their cars when electricity prices are cheap.
The journey began in 2017, when Shell acquired NewMotion, Europe's largest charging provider, now known as Shell Recharge Solutions. Since then, Shell has been laying the foundations for a comprehensive charging infrastructure for EVs in the German market.
In line with its commitment to becoming a net-zero emissions company by 2050, Shell is also breaking new ground in e-mobility. One such initiative is the Shell Recharge e-Deal, a separate project not directly related to the dynamic pricing project.
The dynamic pricing model for ultra-rapid charging aligns pricing with fluctuations in the electricity exchange price. This means that EV drivers using the Shell Recharge app and card can currently charge from as little as 42 cents per kWh. Lower prices may occur during periods of high renewable energy supply, such as around midday. However, prices may rise when demand exceeds supply, such as in the early evening.
The app displays the current charging prices at individual Shell Recharge stations, offering opportunities for users of the Shell Recharge app and Recharge card to benefit from lower prices during times of high supply and low demand.
Shell Deutschland has launched a pilot project for dynamic electricity pricing at rapid charging stations. The dynamic pricing for ultra-rapid charging will adjust charging costs based on factors like demand, time, and location to optimize usage and manage grid load efficiently.
Since 2019, Shell has been installing ultra-rapid charging points with a minimum output of 150 kW at its service stations. Last year, the network was doubled to over 1,600 ultra-rapid charging points. The exact prices may vary depending on the exchange price and other factors, but Shell Recharge offers a 25% discount per kWh for a monthly base fee of 4.99 euros, limited to a maximum of 400 kWh per month.
The Shell Recharge e-Deal can be easily booked by any customer via the app. The spot price is determined daily on the electricity exchange based on supply and demand forecasts. The aim is to provide financial incentives for EV drivers to charge their cars when electricity prices are cheap, contributing to a more sustainable and efficient energy system.
