The Kralyn Positron: A Revolutionary Upside-Down 3D Printer 🔄🚀
Unusual Inverter 3D Printer Fits Within Its Material Case
Ever since the emergence of new FDM printers, we hardly find one that catches our eye - until now. The Kralyn Positron sets itself apart from the crowd. Haven't heard about it yet? Check out the video below 👇
Unlike traditional 3D printers, the Positron adopts an upside-down configuration, housed neatly in a filament box, with a print volume of 175 mm x 176 mm x 125 mm. The distinctive design challenges the norm, and here's why it's worth checking out!
Unconventional Layout, Exceptional Performance 🤯
The Positron turns the printer world upside down by placing the hotend and XY-gantry under the build plate, directly on the base. This might seem counterintuitive, but remarkably, it provides impressive benefits:
- Improved Bridging: The hotend supports the plastic as it extrudes, potentially enhancing bridging capabilities - a significant gain for complex models.
- Enhanced Rigidity: By eliminating the need to suspend the XY gantry, the printer can mount the gantry directly onto the solid aluminum base plate, bolstering its overall sturdiness.
- Maximized Print Volume: The gantry axes are arranged diagonally across the base plate, maximizing the available print volume within the size of a filament box.
- Adjustable Z-axis: The Z-axis disconnects and lays flat on top of the printer when not in use, ensuring perfect alignment with linear rails when mounted.
Filament Adaptation 🔄
To accommodate the unique layout, the Positron routes the filament from the side, making a 90-degree turn before extrusion. Creating this configuration took some iteration, but it allows for increased flow due to the large melt zone volume.
However, it may make hotend maintenance slightly more complex, and plastic debris might potentially enter the gantry mechanism and cause jams. But these concerns are barely denting the excitement surrounding this creative design!
