Unveiled Tesla Model Y undergoes winter testing, revealing its updated appearance
Tesla is gearing up for a significant update to its popular Model Y SUV, with mass production of the revamped model set to begin at its Gigafactory Shanghai in early July 2025. The factory will undergo a short shutdown and upgrade period from July 1st to July 4th to prepare for the expansion of the Model Y production line.
The facelifted Model Y is expected to see changes in its interior, exterior, battery capacity, and motor performance. These updates are set to significantly alter the design of the vehicle, with the front and rear ends undergoing a notable transformation.
The Model Y has been a resounding success in China since its delivery began in January 2021. In the first eleven months of 2024, the Model Y delivered 418,428 vehicles in China, accounting for 72.87 percent of Tesla's total deliveries in the country during the same period. This makes the Model Y one of the most popular models in China for Tesla.
Reports suggest that the Shanghai factory, which has been producing the Model 3 since January 2020, is also expected to start delivering a six-seat Model Y variant in the fourth quarter of 2025. However, it is unclear if this variant will be part of the initial mass production in July or a subsequent phase.
Tesla's production revamp of the Model Y was first reported by Reuters on March 1, 2023. The company has made no official announcement regarding the specific changes to the Model Y, but multiple automotive bloggers have shared images of a new Model Y driving in the snow, suggesting winter testing is underway.
The facelifted Model Y is not the only update Tesla has in store. The company also recently released the facelifted Model 3, or Model 3 Highland, on September 1, 2023, with deliveries beginning in China on October 26, 2023.
As Tesla continues to innovate and expand its product line, the facelifted Model Y is set to join the ranks of its popular models, further solidifying Tesla's position in the Chinese market.
