Updates #11: Record-breaking highs, ongoing job cuts, and historic union milestones achieved

Hey there, Patchers! Hope you're doing well in this rollercoaster of a week. I've been juggling my love for FIFA and my frustration with corporate leaders in the gaming industry who keep feeding us the line that game industry job stability is just a myth. Sigh Wish they'd pass the ball to me instead, amirite?

Some good news on the horizon though, as union workers from Microsoft subsidiary ZeniMax have finally ratified their union contract after years of negotiations, securing increased wages, anti-dismissal protections, and even AI safeguards. Clapping hands emoji

Speaking of AI, UK studio Frontier Developments quickly reversed course on using AI to generate portraits for their upcoming game after fans pushed back, faster than you can say "raptor on rollerblades"!

Riot, on the other hand, had to shutter Hypixel Studios and cancel Hytale after a decade in development. Despite their best efforts, they just couldn't get the sandbox RPG to meet their vision.

Unfortunately, several studios have had to lay off employees in recent months. Sumo Group subsidiary The Chinese Room seems to have cut jobs, and still more layoffs are expected from Lost Records developer Don't Nod. Deep breath Microsoft also reportedly plans to cut more jobs at its Xbox gaming division soon.

In other headlines, MindsEye developer Build A Rocket Boy is making layoffs just weeks after the poorly-received game's launch. And if you need a new headset, Xbox has teamed up with Meta to release a Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition.

Peak, the chaotic climbing game from Landfall and Aggro Crab, managed to achieve 2 million sales in just nine days, despite being developed in under a month on a budget of under $200,000. Talk about scaling new heights!

In industry news, the UK government has announced a £30 million Games Growth Package to support new game studios and talent over the next three years. And Sony is facing a Dutch lawsuit over artifically high PlayStation prices.

Unionization efforts are growing among gaming workers, leading to historic contracts like the one with Microsoft and to a recent agreement between SAG-AFTRA and major video game companies. Despite these gains, job security remains a challenge in the rapidly changing gaming industry due to consolidation, restructuring, and ongoing layoffs.

  2. Sporting a blend of technology and AI, the UK studio Frontier Developments quickly reversed course on using AI to generate portraits, following fan backlash faster than a raptor on rollerblades!
  3. In a surprising twist, while some studios grapple with layoffs and consolidation in the industry, Peak, a climbing game developed in under a month for under $200,000, achieved 2 million sales in just nine days, scaling new heights in the European-leagues and Premier-League of gaming.
