Virtual reality headsets powered by Horizon OS from Meta are set to hit the market, according to recent reports - here's what we currently know about these upcoming devices.

Meta, the tech giant behind the popular Meta Quest VR headsets, is set to expand its horizons with the help of some new partners. Here's a rundown of what we know so far about the upcoming partnerships with Asus and Lenovo.

Meta's partnership with Asus and Lenovo, announced in April 2024, marks a significant step in the company's journey. One of the results of this partnership is the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition headset, a limited edition VR headset that's already available.

Both Asus and Lenovo are working on developing mixed reality devices for productivity, learning, and entertainment. The Asus ROG, for instance, is expected to be an "all-new performance gaming headset." The Lenovo Legion Go S, on the other hand, is rumoured to come with Valve's SteamOS, similar to Meta's plan to expand Horizon OS to more devices.

While no release dates have been confirmed for these new headsets, it's likely that they will run on Horizon OS. The Asus ROG "Tarius" VR headset, one of the first third-party headsets to run Horizon OS, is expected to come with eye-tracking and face-tracking, and either QD-LCD or micro-OLED displays. However, despite leaks indicating it would be, the Tarius was not shown at Meta's Connect this year.

There's also speculation that these third-party headsets might be waiting for rumored chips to be announced during Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon Summit in September. Meta's collaboration with Qualcomm suggests that these devices will be powered by Snapdragon processors.

In addition to these partnerships, Meta is also working on other devices, including the Meta Ray-Ban Display smart glasses and Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) specs. And let's not forget about Xbox Cloud Gaming, which already works on Meta's current VR headsets, including the Quest 2.

As for the future, rumours suggest that a Steam Frame VR headset might be arriving soon. Meanwhile, the Meta Quest 4 is tipped to arrive in 2027. Meta has confirmed that partner VR headsets, including new mixed reality devices built on Meta Horizon OS from Asus and Lenovo, are still on the way. These first headsets from Asus and Lenovo could be officially presented around Meta Connect 2025 or shortly thereafter in 2025.

Stay tuned for more updates on these exciting developments in the world of VR technology!
