Acromag Unveils VITA 93 QMC Small-Form-Factor Mezzanine Cards and Carrier Boards

In a significant development for industrial and rugged embedded computing applications, Acromag has introduced a new line of products based on the VITA 93 QMC standard. This new standard, designed for demanding environments, enables scalable I/O integration in space-constrained systems.

The VITA 93 QMC standard facilitates the use of small mezzanine modules that can be mounted on carrier boards, offering flexible configuration of I/O and processing in rugged, industrial-grade systems. This modular approach supports high-performance computing needs in compact form factors where space, power, and environmental constraints are critical.

Acromag’s initial product launch includes six modules, showcasing capabilities for industrial I/O and rugged applications. These boards can integrate advanced processors, such as ARM cores with FPGA logic, to deliver multi-core and heterogeneous computing performance within a small footprint.

The VITA 93 QMC standard is based on the AcceleRate HD Ultra-Dense Slim Body Array connectors from Samtec. It addresses power and cooling requirements in a standard fashion, ensuring efficient heat dissipation and power management. The standard defines the layout for mezzanine cards as well as carrier boards, streamlining the design process.

The new modules from Acromag fit in a Single QMC slot, and carrier boards can be custom or based on standard form factors like the PCIe card, 3U and 6U boards, and small-form-factor standards like VNX+ and PC/104. Double, triple, and quad layouts can manage various combinations of Single QMC and Double QMC modules, providing flexibility in configuring I/O and processing resources per mission requirements.

Carrier boards with multiple slots can handle different combinations of mezzanine modules, making it possible to tailor the system to specific applications. The wider modules support larger chips like GPGPUs and AI accelerators, further enhancing the system's computational capabilities.

The VITA 93 QMC standard fills a gap in small-form-factor, rugged modular design, offering an open standard supported by a number of vendors and backed by VITA. This standard is an alternative to proprietary solutions or form factors like M.2, providing a more flexible and versatile option for industrial and rugged applications.

The applications of these VITA 93 QMC-based products include industrial control, defense, aerospace, and other sectors requiring robust and modular embedded computing hardware that can operate reliably in harsh conditions while offering flexibility to configure I/O and processing resources per mission requirements.
