Volkswagen to Launch Affordable Electric Compact Cars in 2026, Explores AWD Options

Volkswagen Group is set to expand its electric vehicle (EV) range, with plans to introduce affordable compact models and consider all-wheel drive (AWD) options for enhanced performance. The group aims to make electric mobility accessible to a wider range of customers.

Currently, Volkswagen Group does not offer an electric car below 25,000 euros in the compact segment. However, this is set to change with the upcoming 'Electric Urban Car Family'. Scheduled for launch in 2026, this range will include four models priced under 25,000 euros: the VW ID.Polo, ID.Cross, Škoda Epiq, and Cupra Raval.

The group is exploring AWD options for several of these models, including the mini SUVs VW ID.Cross and Škoda Epiq. While the specific engineering team or supplier for the AWD system is yet to be confirmed, Volkswagen Group will develop this technology in-house, as both models are based on the group's electric vehicle platform and technology. Even the sporty top models like the GTI or R are considering AWD to boost performance. The small MEB+ platform for compact electric cars is currently designed for front-wheel drive, but additional motor(s) can be added for AWD functionality.

Volkswagen Group's electric offensive in the entry-level range is promising, with affordable compact models and potential AWD options on the horizon. The 'Electric Urban Car Family', set to launch in 2026, will bring electric mobility to a broader customer base, further cementing the group's commitment to sustainable transportation.
