Week 40, 2024: Model 3 hits staggering 729-mile range, Spotify disabled in vehicles, China imposes tariffs, Cybertruck recall announced
In the world of electric vehicles, Tesla is making waves with its latest offerings, while facing challenges in Europe due to trade disputes. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz attempted to sway EU heads of state against a commission's tariff proposal on Chinese-made electric vehicles, including those from Rivian. However, his efforts yielded little success, as ten EU countries, including France, backed the proposal. Five countries opposed it, and the rest abstained, indicating a divided stance among member states.
Tesla is introducing a new variant of the Model 3 in Europe, the Model 3 Long Range RWD, equipped with a large battery and rear-wheel drive. As of Saturday, the vehicle is not yet available for configuration, and its price remains unknown. In contrast, the Cybertruck, Tesla's futuristic pickup truck, is now available for order, starting from $79,990, a significant increase from the original 'Founder's Edition' package priced at $20,000.
Production numbers for the Cybertruck, produced between mid-November 2023 and mid-September 2024, stand at 27,185 units, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Tesla claims a production capacity of over 125,000 Cybertrucks per year since the end of 2023.
In other news, Tesla is facing a software issue with the Cybertruck's rearview camera, prompting a recall. The issue may cause the camera image to take too long to appear on the screen.
On a positive note, Tesla CEO Elon Musk expressed joy about a recent court verdict dismissing a lawsuit against him, which alleged he misled shareholders about Tesla's autonomous driving capabilities. Musk also announced on Twitter that the Full Self-Driving (FSD) software would soon be able to drive more than 10,000 miles without requiring critical human intervention.
However, the company is facing challenges in the EU, as member states have agreed to impose tariffs on electric vehicles from China, including those from Rivian, with Tesla set at 7.8 percent. Germany, in particular, fears Chinese retaliatory measures if a negotiating solution is not found.
In the midst of these developments, Tesla is discontinuing the free use of the Spotify Premium music service for its mobile plan, effective December 1st. Customers with their own paid Spotify subscription can continue using the premium service in their electric vehicle.
The Model 3 Long Range RWD, with 18-inch wheels, boasts a WLTP range of 729 kilometers. With base wheels, the range is expected to be 702 kilometers, and 640 kilometers on 19-inch wheels.
As the electric vehicle landscape continues to evolve, Tesla remains at the forefront, navigating challenges and seizing opportunities with its innovative offerings, including those from Rivian.
